Bâtard boulangerie and Cafe Moderne
The name of this cafe, Bâtard Boulangerie and Cafe Moderne, puzzled me so I had to deconstruct it. Bâtard, well obviously we all understand that..well, I didn’t until it was pointed out to me, bastard. Fine a bastard bakery, because boulangerie, is a French bakery devoted to breads. But wait who is the bastard. Well bâtard paired with boulangerie denotes a specialized baguette, some would either go so far as to say an “inferior” one – la bâtard. Here is a tray of the bastards.
Bâtard Boulangerie, among other yummy treats, is a French bakery specializing in the bâtard, the shape of which is very convenient for making superior sandwiches. Now you know. Here’s a recipe for a great batard sandwich
The second part of the name, Cafe Moderne, is there because the space is operated as a partnership: a cafe and a bakery. Along with breads and pastries there is a lunch menu.
And the epicurean treats don’t stop there. Also on hand are homemade preserves, farmhouse cheeses and flavourable olive oils. Oh and here is the best news about this newly opened bakery: the bread is not baked at the crack of dawn. No, it is backed later in the morning. So, on your way home from work get in there and buy a loaf and it will probably still be warm. Best news ever!
Wow, there is so much going on in this place, I almost forget about the coffee. They use Umbria coffee. I had a cappuccino. It is not knock-your-socks off, but it’s good.
